On film: Sri Lanka

Whenever I travel, it's rarely without my vintage Richo film camera. There is something about the finality of not being able to check and then re-take a photo and also going out to develop the physical copies of the photos which is quite special.

Last year, I went on a 3 week holiday to Sri Lanka with a friend from uni and my brother. We had an incredible time and ate our body weight in rice and curry. Our itinerary took us from the capital Colombo then up to Dambulla; where we climbed up Sigiriya and Pidurangala Rocks.

We travelled onwards to World Heritage city Kandy and visited the breathtaking Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. Our next stop was a challenge for our driver to reach but the amazing AirBNB  we stayed in on the edge of the Knuckles ranges made the steep climb worth it. The hike to the top of Knuckles (1852m) is not for the faint-hearted, with plenty of leeches and jungle climbing to satisfy the inner adventurer.

The last activity-focussed stops were Nuwara Eliya and Ella, in the tea country hills. Both Horton Plains National Park and the climb to the top of Ella's Rock were highlights of the trip.

Our final stop was the costal town of Hikkaduwa for some rest and relaxation. A side trip to the Galle, proved a fascinating journey through history. The fort was built by the Portuguese, before being altered by the Dutch and then utilised by the British during their colonisation of what was then known as Ceylon.

Worth a visit or two! Hoping it's not too long before I'm back. JW
